Updated on August 29, 2014

So you think you can bake?

Yes of course, you can, just learn the basic and trust your judgement, plus you need to learn the basic baking techniques and preparation for beginners. At first don't be frustrated by the outcome of your baked goods, be it meat, pasta (lasagna), casserole or pastry, biscuit, cookie, bread or cake. Baking is easy as long as you practice the technique and preparation. Like anything in life suffice it to say that you have to experience it -- the joy of baking.

We are in the modern era now, so we use the modern type of baking, the use of oven for baking is the mode today in many households. In commercial bake house or pantry house they use the bigger machine ovens for loads of bread and pastry products. Microwave cn be used now for making some hard solid into liquid state in a jiffy like making the ice cream not as hard or sugar it make it softer, that's for ingredients in baking.

Can I use different baking utensils and experiment on it?

I daresay that when you want to bake you should be mindful of the utensils you are going to use, there are pans for baking and it should be appropriate that you use the proper size if the baking instructions stated it. Like for example using baking pans, choose hte appropriate pans as instructed, for me I prefer the non sticky pans.

They are variations in sheets and pans for baking, there those which are insulated baking sheets, non stick cake sickle pan, toaster oven pan set, by size and purpose, muffin set for example.

  • Go get yourself non stick bakeware set
  • Baking panscome in different sizes and shapes, round, rectangle square
  • Include also the measuring spoons and cups for baking

For bread it is nice to use the non sticky pans and for casserole and lasagna for example I use the glass for baking lasagna

Some other essential baking utensils :

  • electric mixer
  • spatula or fork and spoons
  • whisk set

Do you experiment on the quantity of ingredients for baking?

Are you the type who want to experiment, well if you are just learning how to bake, you must follow the instructions carefully so if a rectangle pan is needed and the size should be exact.

  • The first time you bake, follow the instructions carefully to achieve the best results, follow the instructions carefully.
  • This is the same thing when you bake, every time you bake, use the correct amount and quantity to achieve the best results. Don't experiment on the ingredients and quantity

Like for example use butter if it says butter, don't use margarine or whipped cream and if you need to add milk add say proper milk not the skimmed milk

Some basic techniques to learn in baking

Learn the difference between beating, mixing, folding, creaming and whipping and kneading, get it into action, not just read on it. Learning by doing it is the best in baking as you will experience and you will discover that it is an art. Some other people found peace and satisfaction when after they bake and people love to eat what they cook, besides the children cannot complain anyway, what mommy or daddy bake is good enough for them. But following of course the instruction will make sure that our children are not shortchanged.

Learn the basic concepts about leaveners or leavening agents like yeast, baking soda, baking powder, and the basic of dough etc. I wrote a hub about the three different kinds of leaveners or leavening agents here -- Different Kinds of Leavening Agents.

________________

Follow the temperature to the letter in the instructions for baking

Since baking is cooking food with dry heat for a relatively longer time than roasting or grilling, the temperature is not high as compared to other forms of cooking.

  • Follow the time and temperature according to the instructions stated for example in making basic bread -- (water, baking flour and the added yeast) high temperature of 425 F and higher
  • For baking mixtures that have other ingredients like eggs etc, it is lower in temperature.
  • Check the food you are baking after half the time you started baking it -- half time report so to speak, rotate it or change the position of the baking pan

_____

Conclusion :

Everybody can bake as long as they learn the basic of baking like proper baking ware to use, pans, measuring spoons and cups, basic leaveners or leavening agents plus the ingredients -- the basic and the temperature setting are the most basicones. Follow the instructions carefully when baking and there is nothing like doing it and practice baking until you can bake into -- one to three steps and enjoy it while doing other things.

I hope you learned something from this hub -- Basic Baking Techniques and Preparations for Beginners. Thanks and enjoy baking.
