My Father (an impresario) booked Shirley Bassey back in the early 60's I believe, (although might have been the late 50's), to appear in one of his Variety shows in Guernsey for a season. At the time she was still a very 'raw' unknown talent, and knew little of etiquette and how to behave in the company of other professionals and what order to use cutlery in at restaurants etc, (I seem to remember she was in one restaurant with my Father and some business colleagues and she asked for brown sauce to put on her food. When the waiter brought the brown sauce it was in a serving dish, and Shirley chipped in with "Nooooo, I want the stuff in the bottle!"). She was given a great deal of coaching to tidy up her loose ends, and then, as we know, she went on to far greater things and is now the star we know today.
Great Hub and well written.
Sadly my Father died back in 1986 Alexandria, but his death was mentioned in the Stage Newspaper with a lovely write up. Many of the acts he booked when they were barely known, yet they went on to become very famous, (he had a great eye for potential talent). Just some of the acts he booked (as well as Shirley), were,
Freddie and the Dreamers
The Rolling Stones
Val Doonican
Paul Daniels
Morcambe and Wise
Little and Large
Dick Emery
Ronnie Corbett
Plus many many more that escape my immediate memory right now.
Great Hub! I really enjoy listening to Shirley Bassey sing. She has such a great voice and has been singing forever. Good Work!
